Here’s how it works:

  • Schedule a free consultation session so that we can run conflicts and make sure this service is a good fit for your business.
  • If all is in sync, an engagement agreement is provided and signed.
  • You'll receive a packet providing an overview of the legal areas surveyed to help you understand the survey questions and scope.
  • A survey with multiple questions across different legal areas will be distributed. Depending upon the number of business persons involved, there may be calls before, during and after the survey completion to make sure sufficient information is collected.
  • A roadmap will be provided that summarizes survey responses, identifies key legal risks and provides recommended legal solutions.
  • This audit can usually be completed in a 2-4 week period. Timing depends on the complexity, client responsiveness and the amount of follow-up needed to collect information.
  • Some recommended solutions will cover services that Extended Counsel can provide. Other recommendations may need to be completed internally or require external services that we don’t handle (ex: issues relevant to a heavily regulated area that is better served by counsel specializing in that area). For any services that we don’t handle we do our best to provide referrals.

We are provide ad-hoc services like other outside firms but differ in that we can also be embedded within the company on an ongoing basis. This makes it easier for you to obtain proactive legal services that can prevent legal headaches and the associated costs.

If you engage our firm for ongoing representation, then unlike traditional outside counsel:

  • We provide ongoing legal oversight, not just issue‑specific advice
  • We learn your business, risk tolerance, and priorities
  • We help prevent legal issues, not just respond to them
  • We act as a strategic partner to leadership

We would most often work as your primary legal advisor, supplemented by specialist counsel when needed. This also means that if you are working with specialist counsel on issues like tax, IP or litigation, you can continue working with that counsel. We manage the issues outlined in our Services section, identify issues that should be addressed with specialist counsel and coordinate with specialist counsel (so you don’t have to spend time being a middle man).

Fractional legal services tend to be a strong fit for:

  • Startups and scale‑ups
  • Founder‑led companies
  • SaaS and technology companies

Yes, fractional legal services add legal capacity, allowing in‑house counsel to focus on core priorities while maintaining strong legal leadership across the organization.

Fractional legal services can augment in-house counsel by:

  • Handling overflow matters, especially during M&A activity and other projects that spike legal workloads
  • Leading specific workstreams
  • Managing outside counsel
  • Covering executive meetings or negotiations

Fractional legal services are also used during transitions such as:

  • When an in‑house GC is newly appointed
  • During leave, sabbaticals, or unexpected exits
  • While recruiting additional legal team members
  • When expanding international or regulated operations

This ensures continuity and stability without disrupting leadership.

Fractional legal services allow companies with existing in-house counsel to:

  • Scale leadership on demand
  • Pay only for the level of support needed
  • Avoid premature headcount expansion
  • Adjust as the business evolves

This flexibility is particularly attractive to both growth‑stage and enterprise teams.

Yes. If you engage the firm for ongoing representation, a key part of the engagement is business immersion, including:

  • Learning your products, customers, and risk profile
  • Understanding leadership priorities
  • Aligning legal advice with business objectives

Fractional legal services are designed to feel more like in‑house counsel than external law firm support.

Absolutely. Fractional legal services often involve:

  • Advising executives and founders
  • Supporting sales, HR, and operations teams

  • Acting as a point of contact for legal questions across the organization

We fit into your existing workflows.

Yes. One of the biggest advantages of fractional legal services is:

  • Selecting appropriate specialists
  • Controlling legal spend
  • Translating legal advice for the business
  • Ensuring consistent strategy across matters

It provides another way for clients to significantly reduce outside counsel costs.

It can be either.

Some clients use fractional legal services:

  • As a long‑term alternative to a full‑time hire
  • As a bridge until hiring an in‑house lawyer
  • During periods of growth, change, or transition

Engagements are designed to evolve with your needs.
